Northern Territory Cricket has today announced former South Australian fast bowler Nick Winter as the organisations new Head of Cricket.
NT Cricket Announce Nick Winter as Head of Cricket
Winter, originally from Canberra, will arrive in the Territory with a professional cricket career spanning nearly 10-years, including 22 Sheffield Shield and 8 One Day Cup matches for the South Australian Redbacks, as well as 8 T20s for the Melbourne Renegades, Adelaide Strikers, Hobart Hurricanes and Northern Districts (New Zealand).
Following his retirement from professional cricket last year, Winter has balanced a career in both finance and sports administration, working as an Operations and Stakeholder Relations Coordinator for the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA), while also working as an Investment Manager for a finance company based in Adelaide. Winter has also previously spent time working with the Adelaide Crows and South Australian Football League in Football Operations roles.
Holding a Degree in International Studies, Diploma in Leadership and Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Northern Territory Cricket CEO Gavin Dovey said Winter, 31, had been chosen following an extensive recruitment process to fill the role previously held by Darren Treumer who resigned in April.
“Nick was a very strong candidate who impressed right from the start, demonstrating great drive, capability, and leadership attributes amongst a high-quality group of applicants.
“He has extensive playing experience as a contemporary professional cricketer, has come through a Territory pathway system (ACT), and has a set of skills, experiences and a network that positions him to make a significant impact on cricket in the Territory.
“I’m thrilled Nick has chosen this opportunity for the next stage of his career and look forward to him joining us at the end of the month.”
Winter took 78 first-class wickets at 30.85 for the Redbacks, making a blistering start to his first-class career with figures of 10/109 in just his second match in 2018. That year Winter would go on to be selected in the ACA’s Domestic Team of the Year before claiming the prestigious Barry Jarman Rising Star Award and SACA Sheffield Shield Player of the Year.
“To be given this opportunity is a huge step in my personal and professional development, and I strongly believe my decade-long experiences within the professional system and previous exposure to NT Cricket will help contribute to success within the Territory”.
“I am excited to work alongside Gavin and the wider NT Cricket team - there are some great initiatives such as the Junior Strike League and Top End Series which showcase the potential of cricket in the Territory”.
The appointment completes somewhat of a full circle for Nick and his family, with wife Laura growing up in Malak and Nick having spent several years of his youth in Darwin where he played for Palmerston Cricket Club. Nick’s familiarity with cricket in the Territory extends further with two seasons playing in the Darwin and Districts Cricket Competition for both Southern Districts Cricket Club (2012) and PINT Cricket Club (2022).
Nick will commence with NT Cricket in August 2024.
