Northern Territory Cricket is excited to announce that Robert Stewart – President of the NT Match Officials Association and seasoned umpire at the Darwin Districts Cricket Competition – has been appointed as an umpire for Cricket Australia's Second XI men's league.
This landmark achievement marks the first appointment of a NT representative match official at this level, highlighting the growing recognition of talent from the region.
Rob began his umpiring journey in 2016 while playing E grade cricket. A knee injury redirected his path from playing to officiating, sparking a passion that has seen him ascend to the A grade in just a few years.
"Umpiring allowed me to stay connected with the game I love," Rob recounts, reflecting on the unexpected turn that profoundly shaped his career. His rapid progression is a testament to his dedication and a deep-seated love for cricket.
Rob’s officiating skills have not only been acknowledged locally but also on national and international stages. Highlights include standing alongside National Umpire Panel member Sam Nogajski in a Strike League game, officiating at the National Indigenous Cricket Championships and various Cricket Australia National Championships. Rob was also selected as a local umpire for the U19 Male East Asia Pacific World Cup Qualifiers held in Darwin—a role that brought him into contact with diverse umpiring styles and cultures.

Behind Rob's achievements is a network of supporters, including mentors like Greg Azzopardi, Sam Nogajski, Paul Wilson – and of course his partner Maxine and children Zoey and Oliver.
Rob’s journey to reach the Second XI competition serves as an inspiration for others in the NT – embodying the possibilities that dedication, support and love for the game can bring. Rob's advice to anyone considering umpiring: "Take the chance to give it a go. It’s been the best decision I have made."
On behalf of NT Cricket, we extend our congratulations to Robert Stewart for this appointment.
