Away Teams Triumph In Round 1 of Carlton Mid Premier Grade

Every visiting team picked up wins in the opening round of the Darwin and Districts premier cricket competition including PINT who upset the reigning premiers.

The Greens were led by allrounder Coby Edmondstone who was a clear player of the match in his side’s steady five-wicket win over Southern Districts at Gerry Wood Oval.

The off spinner took 4-23 off 10 overs before scoring 38 with the bat opening to help guide his team to a strong win in the 50-over encounter on Saturday.

The Crocs’ 10-142 off 47 overs proved too few as it was chased down with 7.4 overs to spare.

New Greens captain Farzan Chowna who scored 14 was pleased with his side’s performance.

“It was good, I thought everyone played their role pretty well,” he said.

“Our bowlers bowled pretty tidy, it was a bit of a slow and low wicket so it was just about restricting runs and trying to get wickets by building pressure.

“Coby got the reward with his four-fa and then got us off to a good start, got us a run-a-ball 40 when no one else in the game could really score at a run-a-ball.

“That probably won us the game along with a partnership in the middle order with Prasanna and Connor Poulton (28).”

Edmondstone’s score was the equal highest of the game alongside teammate Prasanna Ketheeshwaran who scored an unbeaten 38 off 85 balls to complete the run chase and walk off victorious with Vishwas Saini (17*).

It was also a magnificent way for 14-year-old Noah MacDonald to begin his A-grade journey as the pace bowling allrounder finished with a tidy 0-16 off five overs on debut, to keep the pressure on the Crocs.

“He has been training really well all preseason according to all the boys that have been here,” he said.

“He played a big role for us on the weekend and I’m looking forward to how he goes for us throughout the year.

“He is a pretty confident young man, he is good around the team and I think he will play a big role throughout the year.”

At Kahlin Oval, it was always going to be difficult for Darwin to get back in the game after Connor Carroll’s rapid fire start with the bat.

The Tigers opener struck two sixes and seven fours to begin his knock on 41 off 25 balls before finishing on 90 off 75 balls.

His partner Douwtjie Hoogenboezem (75 off 82) came along for the ride too as the Eagles were put under the pump early at 0-47 off 5.5 overs.

The duo ended up putting on 157 for the first wicket partnership as balls were sent to all parts.

James Doherty scored 49 batting at number four and the Tigers had the only score above 200 for the round with a total of 10-270 set off 49.5 overs.

Charlie Smith’s arrival to the 2024 season was full of style as the exciting leg spinner took 4-32 to sew up the win for the Tigers.

His key wickets of Jacob Dickman (38) and Daniel Kerber (0) really put the Tigers in front.

In the closest game of the round, Waratah travelled down Tiger Brennan Drive to score a 20-run win over Palmerston.

Warriors coach Udara Weerasinghe was the pick of the bowlers with 3-24 off 10 overs while Dave Dubey took 4-32 including the last two wickets of the game.

The pair powered to take the last four wickets of the game with three bowled dismissals and a caught by Mithuru Perera.

With an over to spare, Palmerston were bowled out to begin their season with a narrow loss.

It sets up a big game for both side’s this weekend as Palmerston face the Tigers and the Warriors host the 1-0 Greens.

Stay tuned for a round preview later in the week.
